Abstract

Fake news has now turned out as the most reliable tool for the fanatics to create unrest and violence in the society. One short message has the potential to incite hatred among various sections in the society and there is still no clarity as to why fake news, which is a lie, is spread by the people who abhor lies. As for the definition, any false or misleading information which gets masqueraded among the masses as legitimate news could be deemed as “fake news”. The definition seems convenient. However, the legislature of almost every nation has not been able to bind the same under a proper definition and to finally check the mayhem created by fake news. Though it would be convenient to simply ban all such communication in the form of news, but then, the much-cherished freedom of speech and expression too needs to be protected. This study endeavours to find out the reason why fake news are spread so easily and the major difficulties faced by the legislature in combating the scourge of fake news. Finally, possible solutions to curb the menace have been explored in the study.
