AN INSIGHT STUDY OF THE PROTECTION OF WORKER’S WAGES: A PERSPECTIVE OF THE CAMEROONIAN LABOUR LAW

Abstract
The protection of a worker’s wages against arbitrary deductions, unjustified assignments and unreasonable attachments is one of the greatest priorities of the legislator due to the importance of wages as regards to the provision of basic needs. The Cameroonian labour code in line with the international convention no.95 on the protection of wages has rigorously protected the earnings of the worker against unjustified assignments, arbitrary deductions above the percentages provided by the law and protected against seizure by the employer and third parties. The law has brought out the procedure to be respected during such operations. However, it would be said that the manner of implementation of the law poses a problem in practice based on that the control mechanisms put in place to see into the scrupulous respect of these rules are weak, the enforcement by the courts are slow and costly and the fact that workers themselves are not availed with the law to an extent. It is based on this that an insight analysis of the protection measures for the deduction and assignment of worker’s earnings would be analyzed demonstrating the various lacunae and suggestions for a way forward.
